The second nationwide Mobilfunk-Messwoche week starts on 24 June 2026 and runs until 1 July 2026. It takes place throughout Germany.
However, you can always check your network coverage outside of the campaign time frame. Every measurement contributes to improving transparency on network quality.
The aim of the Mobilfunk-Messwoche is to develop a more accurate picture of users’ experiences on mobile communications. There is user data on mobile communications, which the German Federal Network Agency has been collecting for years using the broadband measurement app and presenting the results in a dead zone map (”Funklochkarte”) (Gigabitgrundbuch). The app uses location-based detection to determine whether the user’s end device is connected to a mobile network, and with what technology. However, data is not available for all areas.
In addition, the German Federal Network Agency regularly collects data from mobile network operators about their area coverage using the 2G, 4G and 5G mobile standards, and publishes it (Mobile Network Monitoring). The network operators calculate the supply from the consumers’ perspective for the whole of Germany based on the uniform specifications laid out by the German Federal Network Agency. This information can, however, differ significantly from the reception quality experienced by consumers in real life.
As part of the Mobilfunk-Messwoche, we want to expand upon and improve the existing database by jointly comparing user measurements! The collected data can be used to reveal potential for action and positive developments.
Mobilfunk-Messwoche is a week-long joint initiative by federal, state and local governments. The German Federal Government is represented by the Federal Ministry for Digitalisation and State Modernisation. The initiative is organised and managed by a committee of federal, state and local government representatives.
The data is stored locally before being transmitted to the broadband measurement system when your data connection is good enough. The results are then added to the Gigabitgrundbuch’s dead zone map. The findings are used to review the data submitted by network operators and to further develop user-centric parameters for mobile communications measurement, thus revealing potential.
The broadband measurement app collects the following data:
You can find more information about the collected data in the app’s data protection policy or here.
The collected data serves as an indicator of the mobile network quality experienced by consumers. The app for bandwidth measurement records the mobile network reception of the smartphone and saves this information along with GPS coordinates.
Connection quality data such as the maximum available data transmission rate, is not collected during network coverage measurements, but you can use the “test speed” function in the app.
It’s easy. All you need is your smartphone and the Federal Network Agency’s “Mobilfunk-Check” app. Just download the app and start collecting network data straight away. There’s no need to register. You can find out more in the video. The link to download the app is provided on our website homepage.
Yes. In fact, the more often you check your network, the better! This means that even more useful data can be collected.
Our initiative runs from 24 June 2026 to 01 July 2026. However, the broadband measurement app tracks the mobile network year-round, so you can test your coverage anytime – before, during, or after the initiative week ends.
From anywhere in Germany. Data from rural areas is particularly helpful. Why not leave the app running while you’re out walking, hiking or strolling through the woods? Certain environments and situations can impact the function of the app. For example, indoor spaces or active WiFi connections to a hotspot. Please observe the information provided in the app.
You can always check your network whenever you travel shorter or longer distances – whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or using public transport. Just make sure you don’t let your smartphone distract you when driving. If driving a vehicle, start the recording before setting off, and finish it once you reach your destination.
When recording the mobile network, the app works in the background. It only requires a minimum of mobile data to achieve this. If your internet connection is good enough, small data records are transmitted. Otherwise the transfer is done at a later time when you have a good internet connection, e.g. via a WiFi connection. When using an app in the foreground, additional map data is loaded which may increase your data usage.
To take part in the Mobilfunk-Messwoche, you need a smartphone with a compatible operating system, access to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, and an active SIM card or e-SIM in your device. You don’t need to have the latest smartphone, but it must be able to install and use the app – although this usually isn’t a problem.
The mobile network monitoring maps the area coverage with the mobile network standards 2G, 4G and 5G in outdoor areas. This is data provided by the mobile network provider. For more information, please visit:
